Hello … I’m Nora. Nice to meet you. I am a writer and critic. I write fiction and criticism on emerging issues within digital visual culture, research-based experimental art and music practices, and the philosophy of emerging technology. 
I’m currently Special Projects Editor at Rhizome, after a year as Acting Editor, and several years as contributing editor. I was an Eyebeam research resident into 2017. All my writing is on this site, but for ease, my CV of publications and editing is here.

News: This fall I’m joining the faculty at RISD, in Digital and Media, teaching critical theory and artistic research, critical writing for artists, and history of digital media. Thrilled!

I’ve published criticism in 4ColumnsArt in America, Flash Art, Mousse, California Sunday, Spike Art, The Village Voice, Rhizome, aCCeSsions, POSTmatter, After Us, Ran Dian, AVANT, and Kill Screen. I have published fiction in ConjunctionsAmerican Literary Review, DIS, and Hunger Mountain. Last year, I wrote a small book with Steven Warwick, Fear Indexing the X-Files, published by Primary InformationI collaborate frequently with artists in ongoing relationships, contributing essays and fiction to their exhibitions at Serpentine Galleries, Chisenhale Gallery, and the Venice Biennale, sometimes within books published by Koenig Press, Sternberg Press and Mousse.

Awards: I’m a 2018 recipient of the inaugural Critical Writing Grant given through the Visual Arts Foundation and the Crossed Purposes Foundation, a grant that is supporting this year’s creation of the grounds for a book of criticism on artificial seeing, speaking, and creating. My art criticism has also won a Thoma Foundation 2016 Arts Writing Award in Digital Art for an emerging arts writer, awarded by the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation.

Speaking: I speak frequently at festivals, museums, and galleries and work with curators, activists, and scholars with overlapping interests. Notable recent speaking engagements have been at Triple Canopy, as part of Chatbot Laureate with Lucy Ives and Alexandra Kleeman, at Gray Area Festival, transmediale in Berlin, UCLA IDEAS, New School, and NYU IDM. In 2016, I spoke at the Whitney about Ian Cheng’s live simulations as part of New Ways to See: Digital Art Criticism Now. And at New Museum that year, I helped produce and moderate Together in Electric Dreams, a session on the present and future of artificial intelligence within Open Score, an art and technology symposium. General Interests: I am most interested in how we manage to express joy and wonder, and maintain our creative energy, within the bounds of increasingly oppressive systems. I want to ground any analysis of creative work in the social, political and material realities that make the work possible. I’m compelled by play between affect, cognitive studies, and emerging technology: namely, how new tech- makes us feel, think, and relate to one another in new ways. I’m most hopeful for the new virtual systems, platforms and mechanics that might just allow for a more open, learned, and compassionate world.
