Hello … I’m Nora. Nice to meet you. I am a writer and Acting Editor at Rhizome. I spent the last year as a research resident at Eyebeam. I write fiction and criticism, with a focus on digital visual culture, artificial intelligence, and electronic music. Last year my criticism won a Thoma Foundation 2016 Arts Writing Award in Digital Art for an emerging arts writer, awarded by the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation.

Here is a nice interview with me conducted by Marco Kane Braunschweiler about my writing practice and thinking that came out this fall on The Creative Independent.

This year, I wrote a small book with Steven Warwick, Fear Indexing the X-Files, published by Primary Information. I’ve published in 4ColumnsArt in America, Flash Art, Mousse, California Sunday, Spike Art, The Village Voice, Rhizome, aCCeSsions, POSTmatter, After Us, Ran Dian, AVANT, and Kill Screen. I have published fiction in ConjunctionsAmerican Literary Review, DIS, and Hunger Mountain.

I collaborate frequently with artists in ongoing relationships, contributing essays and fiction to their exhibitions at Serpentine Galleries (upcoming), Chisenhale Gallery (past) and the Venice Biennale (ongoing), sometimes within books published by Sternberg Press and Mousse.

I studied writing at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop (M.F.A., Fiction) and Harvard (B.A., English and American Literature and Languages). I also have extensive professional experience as an editor and teacher of writing, leading critical writing courses, writing business case studies, and editing fiction and non-fiction.

At Eyebeam, I am writing an essay series titled Invisible Systems, which is the foundation of a larger publishing and online exhibition project. The main theme is language and narrative engineering and design within technology as it enacts various ideologies. Chapters focus on bots and virtual assistants, simulations, pitch culture at creative tech- incubators, and artwashing in autocratic states. Invisible Systems is produced in partnership with Avant.org and co-curator Sam Hart.  logo_san_black_white

The first chapter, Trust and Believe, kicked off with a full-day event on April 29th. This afternoon symposium of performances, readings, and conversations, brought artists, poets, programmers, and designers together to investigate emerging AI through the lens of conversational and narrative design. 

I’ve spoken most recently at Triple Canopy, as part of Chatbot Laureate with Lucy Ives and Alexandra Kleeman, Gray Area Festival, transmediale in Berlin, UCLA IDEAS, New School, and NYU IDM. Last fall I spoke at the Whitney about Ian Cheng’s live simulations as part of New Ways to See: Digital Art Criticism Now. At New Museum, I helped produce and moderate Together in Electric Dreams, a session on the present and future of artificial intelligence within Open Score, an art and technology symposium. General Interests: I am most interested in how we manage to express joy and wonder, and maintain our creative energy, within the bounds of increasingly oppressive systems. I want to ground any analysis of creative work in the social, political and material realities that make the work possible. I’m compelled by play between affect, cognitive studies, and emerging technology: namely, how new tech- makes us feel, think, and relate to one another in new ways. I’m most hopeful for the new virtual systems, platforms and mechanics that might just allow for a more open, learned, and compassionate world.
